Understanding FDA Nutrition Label Requirements

The FDA updated nutrition facts label requirements in 2020, introducing significant changes that all new labels must follow.

New Requirements Include:

Added Sugars

Must be declared in grams and as percent Daily Value

Vitamin D and Potassium

Now mandatory (previously voluntary)

Updated Daily Values

Reflects current nutrition science

Larger Calorie Display

Calories appear in larger, bolder font

Revised Serving Sizes

Based on amounts people actually eat

Our nutrition label maker automatically incorporates all 2020 FDA format requirements, ensuring your labels meet current compliance standards.

Our Method

How We Build Your Nutrition Label

Transparency matters on a food label, so here is exactly what our tool does with the data you enter — and what it does not do.

1. You provide the nutrition values

You enter the calories, macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals for your product, along with serving size and servings per container. We never invent or estimate nutrient numbers for you. If you do not yet have values, you can calculate them from a trusted public source such as the USDA's FoodData Central database, or learn how in our guide on calculating nutrition facts from a recipe.

2. We apply the FDA formatting rules

The tool arranges your values into the layout the FDA specifies in 21 CFR 101.9: correct nutrient order, mandatory line items (including added sugars, Vitamin D, and potassium from the 2020 update), minimum font sizes, and the bold calorie display. Percent Daily Values are calculated automatically from the FDA's published reference values, and amounts are rounded using the FDA's rounding rules so your panel matches what regulators expect to see.

3. Everything renders in your browser

Your label is generated locally, on your device. The values and ingredients you type are not uploaded to or stored on our servers — which keeps a proprietary recipe private. When you are happy with the preview, you download a 300 DPI PNG or a print-ready PDF, with no watermark and no account.

What this tool does not do

We format and calculate; we do not verify the accuracy of the values you enter, and using the tool does not by itself guarantee your product is compliant. The FDA accepts nutrient values derived from databases or recipes for most products, but some require laboratory analysis, and serving sizes must follow the Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs). For commercial products, confirm your label with a food regulatory specialist or registered dietitian. See our full disclaimer for details.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a free nutrition facts label generator?

Yes — NutriFacts is a free nutrition facts label generator. Open the generator, enter your serving size and nutrient values, choose from six FDA 2020 formats (vertical, dual-column, tabular, linear, aggregate, or bilingual), and download a print-ready PNG or PDF. Is this nutrition label maker really free?

Yes. Create unlimited nutrition labels without payment, subscription, or credit card. We believe food labeling tools should be accessible to businesses of all sizes.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required for basic label creation. Optional signup allows you to save labels for future editing.

Are the labels FDA compliant?

Our generator produces labels in FDA-specified formats with correct nutrient order, font requirements, and daily value calculations. The nutritional values you enter determine accuracy—for products requiring precise data, consider laboratory analysis.

What file formats can I download?

Labels are available as PNG (ideal for web), PDF (print-ready), and can be printed directly from your browser.

Can I create bilingual labels?

Yes. Our bilingual option produces English/Spanish nutrition facts labels meeting FDA guidelines for dual-language labeling.

Does this replace laboratory nutritional analysis?
